At the start of the Revolutionary war, the United States had no standing army and relied instead on soldiers recruited by states. In 1775, the second Continental Congress created the Continental Army as a way to coordinate the military efforts of soldiers from all 13 colonies. The first Continental Army included 27 infantry regiments, and resulted in resounding victories in the Battles of Saratoga. The Continental Army was dissolved in 1784, and its troops absorbed into the new US Army.
