The King’s Landing cycle of Chapter Packs gives introduction to the Shadows mechanic. Cards exist in a state not yet in play, but no longer in the hand or deck and therefore immune to intrigue claim and deck discard or manipulation effects. Characters, locations, attachments, and events put into Shadows can remain hidden in that state until needed and brought into play, usually with an accompanying effect.
Although each House has at least a few strong Shadows cards, House Lannister leads the other Houses in its use of Shadows. Their greatest machinations often lay beneath layers upon layers of lies and intrigues, and the Shadows mechanic provides them with highly thematic measures of control as they can stand and kneel cards when ripe secrets come to light.
King’s Landing also features the City plots: plots that get stronger for each other City plot played and which can form the core of a deck’s strategy. The more experience your House gains with navigating the city’s intrigues and alleyways, the better you can control events within it. City plots provide powerful measures of control, allowing you to put your schemes into place in the Shadows, recycle cards, and even kneel or kill opposing characters.
With all of its shadowy plots and deceitful characters, King’s Landing may be a city you’d prefer to avoid, but it’s also home to the Iron Throne. When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die, and if you expect to win, you’ll need to master the locations and intrigues of King’s Landing .
