The Fw 190 armored assault aircraft were essentially ground attack versions of the basic Fw 190A series that appeared in the spring of 1944. The most important sub-variant was the Fw 190F-8. In spite of the ground attack role, Fw 190F's scored impressive aerial victories over Russian fighters and ground attack aircraft.
