The Panavia Tornado family of fighter aircraft was jointly developed by a consortium from the UK, Italy and Germany. The first Tornado flew in 1974, while a total of 992 fighters were eventually manufactured. There are three primary versions in the Tornado family that share 80% commonality of parts – the Interdictor/Strike (IDS), Air Defense Variant (ADV), and Electronic Combat Reconnaissance (ECR). The latter is used to suppress enemy air defenses.
Dragon has produced a fantastic twin set of Tornado ECR aircraft in 1:144 scale. These amazing models represent fighters from the Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare). The Italian Air Force acquired a grand total of 100 Tornado IDS aircraft, though 15 of these were later converted to ECR versions. They have participated in combat in the 1991 Gulf War and in the 1999 Kosovo conflict. Both 1:144 scale models are beautifully formed and are a breeze to assemble. High-quality decals from Cartograf are provided to add a touch of class to the finish of these models. One model from the 155° Gruppo E.T.S. (Electronic Warfare Tactical Suppression) “Pantere Nere” (Black Panthers) wears a particularly colorful scheme in celebration of the seventieth anniversary of 50° Stormo, its parent unit. This Tornado twin-pack, yet another desirable addition to Dragon’s successful series of 1/144 aircraft kits, is sure to stir a whirlwind of interest amongst aircraft collectors! |
