The Panzerkampfwagen III (or “Pz.Kpfw III” for short) was purpose-built specifically to combat enemy armored vehicles, but when the German Wehrmacht encountered excellent enemy tanks like the Soviet T-34, the Pz.Kpfw. III proved insufficient for the task and was converted to an infantry support role, and was ultimately phased out by the end of 1943.
The III G model featured a 37mm KwK 38 cannon, which could handle the numerous T-26 and BT tanks of the Soviet Red Army but proved incapable of penetrating the superior armor of the T-34 and KV tanks at range. This gun would ultimately be upgraded to a 50mm cannon by the time Germany invaded the Soviet Union.
Although it suffered from insufficient armor and too small of a gun for combat on the battlefields of the Eastern Front, the Pz. Kpfw. III was a solid piece of engineering, and its chassis was used as the basis for the excellent Sturmgeschutz III assault gun—the most produced German armored fighting vehicle of the war.
